This year’s celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week was marked by the showcase of products produced by entrepreneurial senior citizens on October 1, 2016.

The said celebration was well-attended by senior citizens from various municipalities in the Province of Cagayan with each senior citizen’s association proudly displayed products for sale to participants and guests.

To foster camaraderie amongst the senior citizens, they  participated in parlor games.

This year’s theme, “Pagmamahal at Respeto ng Nakababata, Nagpapaligaya sa Nakatatanda”,  emphasizes that older persons should be loved, cared for, and respected.

“The virtue of respect and care for the elderly has always been a mark of every person’s good character. This is still generally true among Filipinos today.

Sadly though, various social influences caused the general character of Filipinos to deteriorate and this include detoriation of family values particularly among the young generation.

This deterioration of family values includes abuse of the elderly abuse.

Like the country’s little boys and girls who need protection from child abuse, men and women in their senior age or twilight years also have to be protected from maltreatment by others,” said OIC Director Ponciana P. Condoy. ### By: Gela Flor R. Perez, Regional Information Officer II
