As the sun rises over the picturesque coastal village of Aparri, one cannot help but notice the Labbao household which stood as a silent testament to resilience. Poverty had etched its mark on their existence, but within its modest walls, a determined spirit and a beacon of hope emerged—Rodalyn, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rhod Labbao.
From an early age, Rodalyn was instilled with the belief that education was the key to unlocking a better life. Despite the lack of opportunities to continue and pursue their education, her father, a hardworking fisherman, and her mother, a dedicated housewife and barangay health worker, held steadfast to the notion that learning was the most precious legacy they could bestow upon their children.
Rodalyn embraced her role as the eldest daughter, understanding the weight of responsibility that rested upon her young shoulders. As the Labbao family struggled to make ends meet, she took on odd jobs, working tirelessly as a “yaya” to contribute to the family’s meager income and finance her own education.
Rodalyn refused to succumb to their limited expectations despite encountering individuals who dismissed her chances of success due to her impoverished background. Instead, she viewed her circumstances as stepping stones on her path to success. With unwavering faith and a relentless work ethic, she found solace in the belief that anything was possible if she persevered.
A turning point in Rodalyn’s life unfolded when her family became beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), a lifeline that breathed hope into her educational journey. This program became the wind beneath her wings which offered a crucial support during her formative years and paving the way for her to prepare for college.
Rodalyn poured herself into her studies as she was determined to earn her degree in Elementary Education and excel in her chosen field. Her remarkable dedication earned her numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Student Teacher Demonstrator, Community Service Award, and Service Award which set the stage for her triumphant graduation in 2019.
With her Bachelor’s degree in hand, Rodalyn’s journey was far from over. She successfully passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers, propelling her into the next chapter of her life. March 5, 2021 marked a significant milestone as she embraced her role as a Teacher 1 at Macanaya Elementary School in Aparri Cagayan, returning to her community with a deep-seated desire to make a difference.
Yet Rodalyn’s story of triumph didn’t end there. Fueled by her passion for education and an unwavering commitment to serve her community, she longed to return to her alma mater, Bisagu Elementary School, as a teacher. In November of the same year, 2021, her dream became a reality as she was offered a home-based transfer to her beloved barangay.
Today, Rodalyn Valerio Labbao proudly carries the title of Teacher 1 at Bisagu Elementary School. Not only does she shape young minds but she also serves as the coordinator for the school’s 4Ps.
As a grateful recipient of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, she advocates for continued support for underprivileged families, particularly in the realm of education, recognizing that the youth are the true hope of the nation. As she continues to inspire others, Rodalyn Valerio Labbao stands as a shining example that dreams do come true, even in the face of adversity.##
